Ironman Prep Day 83 Jan 6

Today we packed up and said our goodbyes to Glen, Catherine and co. before heading to Tauranga. Once again the car was packed to the hilt and the 4 of us took the windy trail South. Only 2 hours of travelling this time so not too bad. When we got to Tauranga, the weather was really good. We unpacked and got our bikes sorted out for racking, then Jane and I headed off to registration. Still nervous about my leg holding up.

A FOOT NOTE HERE:
This will be Jane's first half Ironman distance race, and probably her only one. Jane has a rare disease that is a Glycogen Storage Disease. There are a few different forms of it, but her one does not allow the stored glycogen in her muscles to be release and used as a fuel source during exercise. Her tank usually is empty about 5 times faster than the normal person, so a normal Olympic distance triathlon (1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run) of 2 1/2 hours for Jane is equivalent to approx 12 1/2 hours of exercise (the same amount of time for an average Ironman race. So for Jane this will be an amazing feat for her to complete this event of a 2km swim, 90km bike, 21km run. As far as we know, Jane will be the first person ever to complete this kind of event with her disability.

After doing registration, racking and checking out the expo (lame), we headed back to the girls and had dinner and an early night. pretty boring really. With not having any expectations on performance for tomorrow, I have virtually no nerves for the race tomorrow. I have my plan and I'm going to stick to it.
